1.How do you see yourself as a reader now?Talk about what you read as an adult. Are you mostly reading books for
information/staff development or more for enjoyment?
I see myself as a good reader. In Sunday School, I am often asked to read aloud. I read mostly mysteries, true family stories, and christian books. I do read some books for information, but I read the other types of books more often for enjoyment. However, I do not read a lot. I would like to read more, but I just don't make time for it. If I begin reading a book, I try to finish it within a week or two. Then, I won't read anything for quite awhile. I do read more in the summer.
I wish I could read a book in a week or two!! That's amazing! It seems like it takes me forever to finish a book just because I don't have a lot of spare reading time right now. I also tend to read more in the summer when the kids are outside playing and I can enjoy the quiet house. I also read some informational books, but I read more for enjoyment.
In the summer I can usually read a book within a couple weeks. A friend of mine decided to keep a log of how many books she read in a year. I think I may do that for the summer and see how many books I can get through. I'm hoping to get through my unread books bookshelf this summer or by December...we'll see.
I do read books my students are reading - it gives us more in common to visit about. I read the Twilight series because of students; I wasn't interested at all in the beginning, but found out they were pretty good books. If a student reccommends a book, I always read it, I think it works towards showing them I value them!
I like to know what my students are reading and what my own children are reading. I tell my own children the same thing my mom told me. If you know what the words mean you can read it. If it was assigned in class and I had to look words up that was a different story.
Each summer I take a whole stack of books home that I have accumulated throughout the previous year, but never got to. It seems that I just don't have time during the school year to read novels, so I made that a high priority last summer. The books I read were ones that I thought I might like to use in my reading class. Two that I read that I would highly recommend for all special ed teachers are: Rules by Cynthia Lord and Out of My Mind by Sharon M. Draper. I am having my freshmen and sophomores read Rules (listen to the audio) in class now and they are really liking it.
I see myself as a good reader now, just like I did in school. I tend to read now more for enjoyment, as it is my way of seeing the world outside of Kansas and Colorado! I like to read books in my comfort zone, just because I enjoy them! I have a few favorite authors (Nicholas Sparks and Rick Riordan) that I tend to stick with most of the time. I, like to author, have a book in my purse almost all the time. My brother was just laughing at me last weekend because of the book in my purse. He told me "you do know you can get that electronically and read it on your iPad..." I laughed because I know he's right. However, there is just something about having the actual book in my had that I enjoy. I really wish right now that I had more time to read; however, it seems like the dishes and the laundry and the kiddos always come first. I know that they don't stay little for long, so I know there will be a time in my life when I can read to my heart's content. :)
I enjoy having the book in my hand also. However, I can see the benefit of having it on an ipad or kindle when you travel...it takes up less room, especially if you're flying. My dream house has a library in it with the ladder you can use to get to the higher shelves and rolls along to cut back on the climbing up and down. :)
Krista, you are right, before too long the kiddos will be gone and you will have more time to read. Enjoy your children! I also like to have books on the IPad; it fits in my purse and some of the Nook books can be 'loaned' to other readers which helps keep the cost down.
I tend to read for enjoyment, and do a lot during the summer.I find myself walking around all day with a book in my hand, and getting nothing else done. I tend to go with the mystery or nonfiction books, but also enjoy an easy fun read at times. My book club has tested my reading genres so I try to branch out on my own. Biographies are good, if I have an interest in the person so have been reading those. I do keep a book log so I can see what and who I read.
A reading log sounds like a really good idea to keep track of what I am reading. I have never thought of using one for myself but I think I will give it a try. I tend to read a lot of young adult books because I am always on the look out for good books to use in class.
I read all I can but I have to squeeze it in. I am working hard on genealogical research. If I find an online article or book for free about a county where my ancestors are from I read read about it to absorb about daily life in that time and place. I also find and save census, death certificates, tax rolls, etc. for the line I am working on. I mostly read on my phone or ipad at night about 10-11 while I should be sleeping and every last second I can squeeze in on the weekends--even while I'm cooking or doing laundry. I also am reading the Bible almost every night; if I miss one night, I catch up the next night. I have a daily bible that has a little old testament, Proverbs, Psalms, then a little new testament. I love it so much because it is sequential, but instead of all old testament, or all new testament, it mixes it up; so now I am reading about Moses (old) and Jesus (new) at the same time. I also read the news all the time. I get different magazines every year because if I ordered everything I really wanted I would be a library! Right now I get Guideposts & Popular Science & receive 3 hometown newspapers a week-- one from where I live, one from where I work, and one from my hometown. Of course I've got Sports Illustrated for Kids and Highlights High Five and Little Kids National Geographic to read with the kids too! I would definitely say I read for INFORMATION but that is complete ENJOYMENT to me!!!
That is a lot of informational reading. Does reading the news ever get you down? I watch the news at night and sometimes it's just depressing. I remember reading Ranger Rick and LOVED those magazines! It's awesome that you're getting your kids into reading for information and enjoyment. :)
You are so good keeping a book log! I always sign up for my local summer reading program and never finish because I end up getting taken up by articles or news rather than sticking to books. Every year I say I will do it...maybe this summer?
If you would try the ipad, you can usually buy a case to prop it up at an angle. I prop my ipad up and read on something as I fold laundry or make supper. We gotta do what we gotta do to read or we'll never get it done.
I also can not give up the book for the ipad or kindle. Have to thumb thru the pages, and look at the cover and such. Have done a few books on tape on long trips and that was ok, as the books were good. We are reading "Teach Like a Champion" at school for our PLC groups. It has short chapters and basic info so is a good read.
I have many things I read. If any book has an interesting cover, I'll read the back to see if it may be something I'd enjoy reading. My favorite authors are Nora Roberts, Jeffery Deaver and James Patterson. I have gotten into Christian book, usually ones that may be good books for a Bible study. I actually have a bookshelf full of books that I need to read :) I also do like reading some educational books...especially related to Deaf education. In the summers and when I finish my masters I hope to get a lot more free time reading in. I try to get about 10-30 min of fun reading in at night before bed.
I see myself as a good reader. Understanding what I read always came easily to me. I don't really remember what books I read as a kid, I did like "Wuthering Heights" in high school. As an adult I mostly read mystery books and romance; historical romance is my favorite. I mostly stick to certain authors like Nora Roberts, Patricia Cornwell, Jude Deveraux, Johanna Lindsey, Sue Grafton, Catherine Coulter FBI series - to name a few. I really like series. Patricia Cornwell writes about a medical examiner named Kay Scarpetta. Sue Grafton writes about a private detective named Kinsey Millhone, each one of her books starts with a letter of the alphabet. She is going through the alphabet and is on letter V. Some of Nora Roberts books are series. I like to follow the characters from book to book. I have read all the Harry Potter books, never got into the Twilight series. I recently read the Hunger Games Trilogy and 50 Shades of Grey. Currently I am finishing up a book by Catherine Coulter, she has a series about 2 FBI agents who are married; Sherlock and Savich. I like to listen to books while driving also. My favorite author to listen to is Sandra Brown, lots of action- keeps me awake! I have participated in all the book studies with HPEC and one with the school I teach at titled "Rethinking Homework". I have taken alot of college classes and have read many books informational books that way. On my own I do not read informational books or self help books for fun. I prefer fiction books for my entertainment. For a college class I had to read "The Giver" by Lois Lowery. I really enjoyed it and recently saw that the 4th book in that series is out. I have not read the other 2 but that is my next purchase on my Kindle. I like both hardcover books and using the Kindle on my IPad to read.
I agree I enjoy self help books. I to have taken many college courses however I only read what I felt was important to me. I like reading for information as well.
Carol, I would be very interested in your observations about teaching The Giver, we plan to read it this spring, and although it's not a new book, I would like to present it even better! Will look for the other books, as I thought Gathering Blue was disappointing in comparison.
Sherri, I have not taught The Giver only read it for a college class. It's a sad book in my opinion so you might want to be careful which class you teach it to and what time of year, not in the winter time! I have not read the other books but want to. The ending of The Giver would be awesome to teach, you could have your students write about what happens they reach the bottom of the hill. Do they die, do they find another community like theirs, do they find a community with lights and colors? Writing an extended ending would definitely go well with common core! Good luck on it:)
I read what I have to read for work. I don't read a lot for enjoyment but when I do read I choose self help books that are real life situations. I mainly read for information. I am a Dr. Phil fan and I like to read any of his books. I see myself as a good reader just would rather be outside working with my animals rather than being inside reading a book. I like books that I can relate to and not have to guess what they are trying to protray.
Carol, Have you read the new Sue Grafton, a book of short stories and the last section stories from her life and how she became a writer. Also I am not a reader of the Oprah books, but just read The 12 Tribes of Hattie, and was a good book. Have done the series on Amish mysteries, but Linda Castillo, very graphic, but good.
No, I have not read that book by Sue Grafton. I have only read her crime series alphabet books. I have a tendency to get stuck on certain authors and not wanting to branch out and read other ones. I need to read more by other authors but I also have only certain types of books I like to read.
One of my favorite pastimes in summer is to read for pleasure. In the summer I can read for countless hours and not worry about being too tired. I know many people that read for a few minutes just before going to sleep at night; I cannot do that. If it is a good book, I want to keep reading and pretty soon it’s the wee hours of the morning and I am totally engrossed in the story. During the school year I don’t seem to have enough time to pleasure read. In the academic year, I read for information and staff development; it’s not nearly as entertaining!
As an adult I read to my boys all the time and push them to be readers. I worry that they will follow in my footsteps and struggle so I am always looking for ways to get them interested in books and find the love of reading. I can find love in reading now as an adult but I must find the perfect series, author, and so on before I will sit down and read. When I do find that perfect one I can read for hours and find myself not able to put books down. I do not read much for staff development/work when I do I struggle and find myself procrastinating about it. That is why I chose this book study this time I was very interested to see what ways I can help my children and my students and even myself become a better reader.
I just started reading more than children books in the last could of years. I read more for pleasure than anything. My son and I have started reading the magic tree house books which has been fun to go places with him through books. I like to read mysteries and of course love stories like books written by Nicholas Sparks. I want my children to love to read instead of struggle with it.
My son loves the Magic Tree House books too! They are short enough that it doesn't take forever to get through one reading a little each night. Nicholas Sparks is my favorite author!! I agree with you...I want my children to love to read. I hope that as they grow up the will develop that love. :)
I have two boys who read and a daughter who is just beginning to enjoy it. The oldest does't go anyway without a book, the other has one most of the time and my daughter who is thirteen has just begun to like to read. I want my children to also love to read. I realized that I read to the oldest one the most and the second some but my daughter not as much and I think that I can see that in their reading habits.
I read for work, pleasure and to gain knowledge. I read when we are driving on long trip(I am not driving). Even sometimes on a trip to town. I like to fiction with a touch of history involved. I also try to read my scriptures each night. I like to read things that are entertaining and take little thought. For me reading is a way to escape.
I enjoy reading books that are Christian/self-help. Since I have been teaching, my personal preferences were replaced by educational types of books, then books that my students were reading. I find some children's literature to have much more of a personal connection than I ever thought possible, being such a devoted Nancy Drew fan as a kid! I still enjoy a wide variety of materials but time constraints always get in the way!
At long last, I am seeing myself as a good reader. I love to read books aloud for my students to help inspire them to become better readers. If I could do it, any of them can as well!
I have been trying to have a more balanced approach to my reading over the past year. In previous years, nearly all of the books I had been reading were for professional development about improving reading. I still read those, but am also making an effort to read several novels (even if they are young adult books). Last summer, I managed to read about 15 novels. I proudly display those on a gold book shelf and allow my students to check them out. Most of them have been read by at least one or more of my students so far this year, so I am sure that I will try to do the same thing this summer.
We have a lot of readers in this bunch. No surprise. I am often in my car traveling to and from work 2-3 hours a day so most of my "book" time is auditory books. I go in spurts where I listen to books all the time to hardly at all. Lately I have been into radio and music more! I think I am a bit confused between getting books on cds and moving to downloading them on my phone or ipod and listening to them the "new" way. I am actually happy to hear of so many people reading. I was afraid it was a lost art. I wonder how much the general population reads (not teachers)??
I see myself as a good reader. I love to read! It lets me escape to another world!! I read every evening before I go to bed. It is horrible if the book is really good and I can not put it down!! There are times when I end up turning off the lights at 3:00 in the morning!!
I still enjoy my paper books. I do not enjoy using my Kindle for reading as much as I do my paperback books!!
